It's really the most idiomatic album from Cavalera's period.
Here is a deep-rooted influence of Brazilian culture, music and heritage. The most in "Ratamahatta" or "Itsari". It's about the roots of Sepultura's members. They didn't forget on their roots and motherland. It's an unique connection of Brazilian music rhythms and metal music.
This tribal metal madness starts with "Roots bloody roots". One of the most popular Sepultura songs. Total anthem at concerts.
Other songs are good or not so good. In my opinion the best ones are "Roots bloody roots", "Attitude", "Cut-throat", "Spit", "Born stubborn", "Jasco", "Endangered species".
Through this tribal inferno there are angry, heavy, hard and crushing guitar riffs.
Thunderous bass rumbles in this tribal metal storm. Cannonades of drums are sometimes adapted in the style of Brazilian music and atmosphere.
Vocals of Max Cavalera are totally powerful and explosive. His voice is like an explosion of volcano. And also a music of this album. Sepultura recorded totally the most unique album. Not the best but in its own essence unique.
All these Brazilian tribal rhythms and voices are a special ornaments in these heavy tunes. It's suitable. Because of Sepultura's roots. It's insane but impressive.
This album contains some magic of simplicity and uniqueness. There's something like a beating heart of jungle. It's not only about metal music. It's about roots and influence. About power of heritage, music and nature. Doesn't matter if you like this album or not. You'll never forget on it.
Album "Roots" was successful because it was something new in heavy metal world. It was also the last album with Max Cavalera who created his new band Soulfly after departure.
The spirit and influence of this album is audible in Soulfly albums.
